Major record labels dominated music in 2020

Updated: Feb 17, 2021

The Official Charts Company has released lists revealing the most popular albums and tracks overall in 2020, as well as the best-selling vinyl and cassette releases, and the most streamed tracks. Next to that the BPI reported that music consumption was up in 2020, with UK vinyl sales growing 10% and cassette sales doubling in 2020. But unsurprisingly, the majority of music people were listening to were major labels, with even the cassette chart being almost exclusively populated by Universal's Polydor label.

Indie label releases are difficult to find in any of the charts, with none in the top ten tracks, albums and streaming tracks. Indie releases only have a few appearances in the physical product lists. Well at least this year was an improvement on last year.

In the 2019 list, the only indie release was a Kylie Minogue best of cassette, which was released by BMG and Warner...? Very questionable Indie...

But in 2020, BMG managed to get a Kylie cassette into the top ten on its own, with her latest studio album ‘Disco’. The album also made the vinyl top ten together with two unquestionably indie releases; Arctic Monkey’s ‘Live At The Royal Albert Hall’ and Idles’ ‘Ultra Modern’, at number nine and ten.
