Bandcamp is expanding it's successful vinyl services

Updated: Feb 22, 2021

Last year Bandcamp had a very successful year, having produced 13.000 LP’s themselves and selling an additional 2 million from other producers. Because of its success, Bandcamp is now expanding it’s successful in-house vinyl production to the wider Bandcamp community.

Bandcamp started producing and selling vinyl on a trial basis in 2019. After a number of successful pilot campaigns, in which they shipped 13.000 records to customers in 65 countries, the company is expanding its vinyl services. Bandcamp has reportedly contacted 10.000 artists to participate in its expanded campaign.

The benefit of using bandcamp to sell vinyl, is that Bandcamp uses a crowdfunding system. It works like this: Artists can set up a campaign and let their fans pre-order records. When the campaign reaches a minimum amount of sales, Bandcamp will start producing and shipping out the vinyl. This system makes it easy and safe for artists to start selling vinyl, because it doesn’t require a big investment.

Vinyl sales have been on the rise for the past 15 consecutive years. Last year 27,5 million LP's were sold in the US, a rise of 46% percent compared to the year before. This rise in sales doesn’t show any signs of slowing down, which shows Bandcamp's decision to expand its vinyl production is a financially smart move.

Last year Bandcamp raised more than 40 million dollar with their Bandcamp Fridays, a monthly campaign on which they waived their commissions to help struggling artists. Because of the success, they are continuing the project in 2021. The dates this year will be February 5, March 5, April 2 and May 7.
