French electronic music duo Daft Punk has announced their retirement after 28 years. They broke the news through an eight minute video titled; "Epilogue", in which they ended a fragment from their 2006 film “Electroma” with the text "1993-2021". Following the video, Kathryn Frazier - the duo’s longtime publicist - officially confirmed the split to various news media, although she declined to give further details.
The eight minute clip features the duo in their familiar space helmets and leather jackets while they walk around the desert. The clip reaches its highlight, when one starts the "self-destruction function" on the other followed by a spectacular explosion. Afterwards, it cuts to the "1993-2021" image with their song "Touch" playing in the background. The video ends ends with the remaining member walking towards the sunset. Check out the full video below.
Because their publicist refused to elaborate on the duo's split, we can just speculate if they will continue working together under different names or whether other new projects are in the works. The group has a famously contrarian and convention-mocking history so its even possible that this announcement could be the beginning of a new project.
But for now, farewell Daft Punk.
