John Frusciante, the Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist, has announced he is working on a Jungle and UK Breakbeat Hardcore album! The record will be released on Venetian Snares’ label Timesig on October 23th and is named after Frusciante's cat, Maya.
John Frusciante is known to many as the guitar player of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. He left the band in 2008, but returned at the end of last year. But not many people know Frusciante also likes to make music by himself! In the past he has already released an acid house inspired album under the alias Trickfinger, as well as material with jungle and experimental influence under his own name.
John Frusciante is now reportedly working on a new album. He told MixMag the 1991 to 1996 era of Jungle and UK Breakbeat Hardcore is his favourite type of music and inspired him to make this album. He added:
“I don't have that interest in singing or writing lyrics like I used to. The natural thing when I'm by myself now, is to just make music like the stuff being released this year. I really love the back and forth with machines and the computer.” (...) “I'd spend weeks making breakbeats, souping up a drum machine, making DX7 patches, and so on. By the time an idea came up that seemed like the beginning of a tune, I had a lot of fresh elements ready to go.”
The album is named after his cat Maya, who kept Frusciante company while he was making music for the past 15 years, but recently passed away.
You can listen to the lead single “Amethblowl” below and pre-order “Maya” via Bleep. The record will be released on Venetian Snares’ label Timesig on October 23th.
